Over the last two years, the council has been meeting regularly with tenants of the Elephant and Castle through a forum called the Shopping Centre Liaison Group. In addition, several other meetings have been held with shop owners from the Walworth Road and the market traders. Throughout 2005 and beyond, the council will increase the number of meetings with local businesses and will try to reach as many as possible that will either be directly or partially affected by the regeneration plans.

Shopping centre turns 40

Shopping centre turns 40

The Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre reached a major milestone, turning 40 in April! Celebrations included a week of activities in the centre and the giveaway of a car to one lucky shopper.

Events held at the centre throughout the week included live bands, a bucking bronco ride, a Harry Potter ride and children’s face painting.

A City Rover car was given away on Sunday April 23 and a Charlie Chaplin look-alike was on hand to add to the festivities. Eight finalists were called forward and asked to try a car key in the door of the car. Winner, Nicola Heaton, was delighted when her key turned successfully, making her the proud owner of a new car!

The event was organised by St Modwen Properties and the Elephant and Castle development team as part of a programme aiming to keep trading active in the shopping centre, until its demolition on around five years time. The centre is being replaced by 75,000 square metres of new retail and leisure space, approximately four times the amount that currently exists in the area.
